Just saw Drake in Syracuse less than a month ago, he wasn’t terrible or amazing. A Drake concert is kinda like listening to the radio really loud. He goes pretty hard on this freestyle though I feel like Drake is falling into rapping with the same flow on every track and I’m missing that originality he got big with. Monday-Friday from now on, I’m spotlighting a different one of the many great all-time producers. I will post a different track each day to show the versatility, influence, and talent these guys have come up with time and time again through the years.
The late great J Dilla starts it. Dilla is still not always given the respect he deserves. Look at his resume: straight bangers with any artists ranging from Common to De La Soul to Busta Rhymes to Janet Jackson.
His first break through was “Runnin’” which was released in ‘95 by hip-hop legends The Pharcyde. It’s a timeless anthem that still bumps today, it even had a dope vintage video to go along with it..

One of my favorite Dilla tracks ever, Jay Dee and Q-Tip got together in 1999 to work on Q-Tip’s Amplified album. Dilla was fresh off working with the Tribe a year before for their The Love Movement album, so Q-Tip and DIlla collaborations were inevitable. ”Let’s Ride” was just one of the ten tracks he produced for the album, which also included “Breathe & Stop” and “Wait Up”.

A Slum Village track is the only way to end J Dilla week. “Raise It Up” may not even be the best track on Fantastic Vol. 2 but it definitely bumps the hardest. They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore..

In 2007 Busta Rhyme’s released a tribute mixtape Dillagence, which is still one of my favorite mixtapes to date.
The truth is that there is no way to cover J Dilla’s career in 5 posts, so I encourage everyone that reads this to get a hold of every Dilla production they can and give it a good listen. His discography is ridiculous and full of bangers and the illest level of production. Dilla was a true hip hop legend.
